On 6 May 2016, twenty First Class Midshipmen, Officer Candidates, and MECEPs were officially sworn in and commissioned as Ensigns and Second Lieutenants. The ceremony began with an explanation of the Oath of Office by Lieutenant Anthony Scalabrino. Following this introduction, the Ensign Bagley Sword was presented to MIDN 1/C Dylan Powell and the Marine Corps League Mameluke Sword was presented to MIDN 1/C Brendan Mazaleski. The guest of honor was NC State alumni and former Midshipman, Rear Admiral Ralph E. Suggs.
MIDN Avery Stone was given the honor of being the first midshipman at the ceremony to be sworn into the Navy. He was sworn in by RADM Suggs and was given first salute by Gunnery Sergeant Roshod Browning. The ceremony continued with various sized groups being sworn in by North Carolina Piedmont Region Commanding Officer Captain Stephen M. Gillespie. Most of these midshipmen received their first salute from GySgt Browning, the Assistant Marine Corps Training Instructor at NC State University. Seven midshipmen were sworn in and given first salute by various relatives, family friends, or NCSU Battalion staff.
After the final commission, all in attendance were asked to stand as Anchors Away and the Marine Corps Hymn were played. This was followed by a group photo of the new Ensigns and Second Lieutenants in front of Withers Hall on North Carolina States’ campus. The ceremony concluded with the official signing of the commissioning paperwork by the new Naval and Marine Corps officers. It was a very proud day for family and friends in attendance, as they celebrated the accomplishments of these newly commissioned officers!Share this post
